July is a special month for card collectors because the “Happiest Card Place on Earth” will be in Cleveland, Ohio, United States for The National Sports Card Convention. Often referred to as “The National”, thousands of card collectors from around the world will make their pilgrimage to the greatest annual card convention.
I attended my first National in 1987 when the show made one of its rare appearances on the West Coast at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. I remember I was going around to different dealers trying to complete the 1987 Topps Baseball Set (and yes I did complete it to go along with my 1986 Topps Baseball Set).
2024 will be my 5th National, and I know I will be amazed when I walk into the main hall where I’ll see thousands of cards and collectibles – new and old. It’s very clear that everybody that’s in the I-X Center in Cleveland will be full of happiness and excitement as we see some of the rarest items in the collectible’s world.
If you can’t make it to Cleveland – don’t worry! Topps, Panini, Upper Deck and others have a long list of new products to keep us all happy.
2024 Topps Tier One Baseball Hobby Box (Release Date: July 3, 2024)
I’ve ripped Tier One Baseball in the past, and 2024 is no different. Tier One is great for me because I like the simplicity of going straight for the hits and ignoring the common filler stuff. With 2024 Topps Tier One Baseball Hobby, you’ll get 1 pack with 4 cards. On average, that pack will contain 2 autographs, 1 relic card and 1 base or base parallel.
2023 Panini Contenders Football Hobby Box (Release Date: July 16, 2024)
An annual favorite, Panini Contenders Football Hobby releases on July 16, 2024 (a rare Tuesday release). Each hobby box contains 6 packs with 8 cards per pack. I personally like Contenders Football for 3 reasons:
- Contenders is a well-respected product line that Panini produces that won’t break the bank (currently price around $444 per hobby box)
- 2023 Contenders Football will be one of the last products released for the 2023 football product year – so if you want to chase a CJ Stroud rookie then this could be your last chance.
- 5 autographs per box (on-average) with one being on-card! You traditionally have to spend big bucks on a high-end product such as 2023 Panini Immaculate Football Hobby to get a chance at ripping an on-card auto. Contenders makes it more realistic for the budget-conscious ripper to get that elusive on-card auto.
2024 Topps Chrome Baseball (Release Date: July 17, 2024)
This is THE release of the month of July 2024. Topps Chrome Baseball is finally here and baseball fans can finally chase that Elly De La Cruz Chrome Rookie. With Chrome being one of Topp’s most popular products, expect to see Chrome Baseball everywhere in different product configurations and budgets. For the autograph chasers, Topps makes 3 boxes with slightly different price tiers with 2024 Topps Chrome Baseball Jumbo HTA (3 autographs), 2024 Topps Chrome Baseball Delight (2 autographs), 2024 Topps Chrome Baseball Hobby (1 autograph). For the budget conscious, you’ll likely see 2024 Topps Chrome Baseball Blaster Boxes and 2024 Topps Chrome Baseball Value Boxes crowding your store shelves.
2024 Topps Chrome US Olympic & Paralympic Hopefuls Hobby Box (Release Date: July 26, 2024)
Every 4 years during the middle of the year, we get an event that grabs the world’s attention with the Summer Olympics. Some of the best athletes in the world will compete in 329 events in 32 sports at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
Topps will be releasing a new product focusing on the American athletes that are “Hopefuls” to the 2024 Games. It’s safe to assume that Topps put this product together month ago using predictions on who would make their respective US Olympic team. They cleverly put in the word “Hopefuls” to make sure they do not repeat the failed 1992 “Dan & Dave” advertising campaign by Reebok. That campaign incorrectly predicted that US decathletes Dan O’Brian and Dave Johnson would duke it out at the Barcelona Olympic Games, but O’Brian did not make the US team.
2024 Topps Chrome US Olympic & Paralympic Hopefuls Hobby releases on July 26, 2024 (first day of the Games) and will include 2 autographs and 1 relic card on-average per hobby box.
2023-24 Upper Deck Allure Hockey Hobby Box (Release Date: July 24, 2024)
While the NHL Stanley Cup Finals ended in June, Upper Deck is not slowing down for hockey fans. We have a couple of hockey releases this month with Allure Hockey and 2023-24 Upper Deck AHL Hockey Hobby Box (Release Date: July 17, 2024).
Allure is traditionally a lower hobby product tier for Upper Deck Hockey at $149 per hobby box. I purchased Allure hobby boxes in the past simply because it’s a fun rip. Each hobby box contains 8 packs with 8 cards per pack and it’s packed with colorful inserts. This year, Allure is bringing back the 16-bit and Doubloons autographed inserts and you’re expected to hit at least one auto per hobby box.
2023-24 Soccer (Release Date: Various)
Soccer fans are very fortunate to have some of the highest quality soccer being played in front of a global audience with the 2024 European Championship and the 2024 Copa América (congrats to Spain and Argentina respectively). Topps and Panini aren’t going to let the excitement go to waste so it’s no surprise they are releasing two products using their Prizm and Chrome product lines:
- 2023-24 Panini Prizm COPAa America Soccer Hobby Box (Release Date: July 26, 2024)
- 2023-24 Topps UEFA Club Competitions Chrome Soccer Hobby Box (Release Date: July 24, 2024)
Whether you’re a soccer fan that is still in the honeymoon phase of international soccer competition or you’re getting excited for next season’s club competition, our friendly cardboard manufacturers have you covered.
2023 Panini Donruss Optic Football Hobby Box (Release Date: July 31, 2024)
Finally the month ends with the release of 2023 Panini Donruss Optic Football Hobby. Often referred to as “Optic”, the flagship 2023 Donruss Football product gets blessed with Panini’s Optichrome look. The elusive Downtown cards will be the chase for this set and they show up one per case on-average. But if you can hit that glorious C.J. Stroud Downtown, you’ll be in a pretty good position going into the upcoming NFL Football season. For those that aren’t fortunate enough to get that Downtown case hit, you’ll be okay. Each Optic box will contain 20 Rated Rookies, 12 Parallels (with 9 being numbered), 4 Inserts and 1 Autograph and price around $850.
